STATE OF THE ART in LIPOSUCTION

Many advances in cosmetic and skin surgery have to be credited to dermatologic surgeons. Today the state of art of liposuction is also one of their contributions, along with those of the past: hair grafting, dermal abrasion, chemical peels, collagen injections, refinements in cutaneous surgery, laser resurfacing, etc…

To reach the state of the art of today liposuction, has been possible thanks to the outstanding contribution of Jeffrey Klein, first developing the tumescent anaesthesia and later the tumescent technique.All liposuction surgeons are greatly indebted to him as the situation has changed a lot since the beginning of this “surgery  from within”.

All of us (liposuction surgeons) who started after Giorgio Fischer, nearly 20 years ago, do remember  that liposuction was a major operation, performed in a hospital, under general anesthesia, with problems of fluid balance and possible blood transfusion, that convalescence was rather long due to the significant inflammatory reaction, and that complications, even if they were not numerous, had to be feared. Today things are very different and everybody agree that the state of art of liposuction surgery is the tumescent technique.

Ultrasonic liposuction, which is not as accepted as their conventional techniques but may be widely used in he future, has been developed also thanked to the tumescent anesthesia.

Certainly in few years other advances will happen, but until now the major contributions to the state of art of liposuction surgery has been accomplished by cosmetic dermatologic surgeons.
